“Do It Yourself”


Dear Friends,

Welcome to HGTV: Do It Yourself.  Lol. After meetings and prayer sessions, we have landed on being our own General Contractor for the renovation project.  Once we received all of the information on the cost of the project, even the lowest proposals were out of our league.  We firmly believe that we have enough qualified licensed sub-contractors and volunteers to do this project.  This will save us an incredible amount of money.  We would love to be in the building for less than $350,000.  We feel this is possible with the information and interested contractors that we have thus far.

While it would have been much easier for us to have a General Contractor to supervise this project, sometimes it just isn’t practical.  The money saved could be used on the project itself.  There is a great deal to be done and we are humbled by the contractors, mission groups, and individuals who have stepped forward to offer their services and supplies.  We are convinced that this started as a grass-roots community project and God wants us to continue in that fashion.

I want to personally thank the men/contractors who have represented some great construction companies.  They are godly people who have helped us understand a great deal about this whole process.  I regret not being able to work with them, but our projected budget would not allow us to do so.  I know that these contractors pushed to get me numbers and worked very hard at trying to crunch numbers.  I pray for God to bless them and their companies.

We have architects coming in next week to look at the property and hopefully we will get our drawings done quickly.  We really need to get started as soon as possible.  We should be able to start demolition soon.  We will be planning a ground breaking and will keep you informed as to when all events take place.

We are currently putting together our team of licensed contractors, so that construction can start as soon as possible.  We are praying for God to send each contractor that He wants on the building.  We are grateful to be working with Dee Morgan with the city of Kingsport.  He will make certain that all things are to code for the safety of workers and our patrons.

I feel a little like Solomon in building the temple.  I know that God has a plan for this beautiful building.  We want to utilize everyone that we can.  We want like-minded people that understand our mission to be a part of this project.  We are believing for God to bring those along who have a passion to preserve this building and help us with the mission before us.

We will be doing some additional fundraisers other than the “Have a Seat” Campaign, the “Pillar Wall”, and the lobby pavers (information on this site).  It will be necessary for us to have an auction at our existing location since we can’t take everything with us.  That will be coming as soon as we are able to close on the property.  We will notify you of ways you can contribute or help raise money for the renovations.

For those of you who do not know the full capacity of our ministry and what we do, we ask that you check out We want to invest in lives of those in our community that are hurting, especially teens.  The theatre has been a place where we have seen young lives restored and families brought back together.

If all goes as planned, it looks like we will be closing on The State with Citizens Bank of Rogersville on July 9th.  God is good.  We are looking into the possibility of getting an equity loan for the construction work. This would allow us to go ahead and get started since we need to be in the building by the Christmas season.  Pray for God’s continued guidance.  Please don’t forget about us.  There is a long road ahead.

I just wanted to send this letter of thanks to everyone for all that you did to help make our kick-off for Renovate the State a success.  The event was very well attended.  It is our prayer that we answered as many questions as possible.

At this point, the 2 bids that we have received range in cost:

1.) $1,175,000.00 (One million one hundred seventy-five thousand and 00/100 dollars).

-This number does not take into account the list of potential donors, in kind, or other cost reduction opportunities

2.) $600,960.10 (Six hundred thousand, nine hundred sixty dollars and ten cents)

-This number does not include the backstage or basement construction.

-This number does not take into account the list of potential donors, in kind, or other cost reduction opportunities.


Both companies are willing to work with sub-contractors that are willing to donate time and resources.  However, those sub-contractors must be willing to sign a contract just as though they are working a job for compensation.  This will guarantee completion of the project in a timely fashion.

There are things that we love about both companies.  Both are faith-based and have been great to work with.  It will come down to final numbers once everything has been researched.

According to our list of donor companies and workers, it looks as though we are going to be able to reduce the price considerably if everything goes through that has been verbalized so far.  We would love to be in the building with a budget not to exceed:

Total = $450,000

We are aware that this will be a miracle.  We have been constantly amazed at what God has been doing for us so far.  We know He has a plan for the renovations as well.

We do want to offer different ways of giving:


I. “ Have a Seat” Campaign:  For a donation of $100, you can have a seat named in honor/or memory of someone you love.

II. “Way Makers”: Pavers will be placed in our lobby for a donation of $250 toward renovations.  Our plans are to finish the lobby with pavers.  This will tie in to the Vintage Theatre theme and we will be able to honor people who contribute monies toward the renovations.  These pavers can also be named in honor/or memory of someone you love.

III. “The Pillar Guild Wall”:  A wall will be constructed on the Market Street side of the State Theatre where the “Will Call” entrance will be located.  We will be moving our current sandstone LampLight Theatre sign from its current location to the State Theatre.  The large stone will be mounted to the wall and bricks will be placed around it to honor our donors.  There are three kinds of bricks that will represent three ways to give:

1. “TORCHBEARERS”:  (4”x 8” dark brick) Those who

contribute $2,000+ toward the purchase of the State Theatre

2.  “KEYSTONES”:  (4” x 8” light brick) Those who contribute $2,000+ toward the renovations of the State Theatre

3. “CAPSTONES”:  (12” x 12” Stone) Those who contribute $5,000+ in monies or materials toward the renovations of the State Theatre

We need these contributions as soon as possible in order to begin the renovation process.

Please be in prayer.  We should be closing with Citizens Bank on the State Theatre in the next couple of weeks.  We are also in a contract with our current property at 441 Horton Hwy in Fall Branch.

When we close on our current property, we will be able to pay-off most of our current debt. The future owners will allow us to use the property until December 31 of this year.

We are pressed for time in order to make these transitions.  It will be the hand of God and the generosity and obedience of His people for this happen.


  • $280,000 in cash and pledges has been raised for the purchase price of the State thus far.  $100,000 of this was loaned for the down payment with no interest for 2 years.  The other $180,000 has been made in pledges to be paid over the next 2 years. Some of these are already “TORCHBEARERS”. Many have made $2000 in pledges to be paid within a 2 year period.
  • “HAVE A SEAT” Campaign:  Thus far 216 chairs have been promised.  150 pledged and 76 paid for already.  This brings the total to $7,600 thus far.
  • “WAY MAKERS”: Total money for pavers is 4 pavers paid for $1,000 and 2 more pledged.
  • “KEYSTONES” & “CAPSTONES”: No one officially. However several businesses and contractors have made pledges to give toward the Renovations.

TOTAL MONEY for our Drop-By Fund-raiser Saturday, June 9 was $4,582 which was pavers and chairs and $200 in pledges.

We have a total balance of $17,842.11 in the Theatre Relocation/Renovation Account thus far.

Again, be in prayer for us as we seek to do God’s will.  Thanks again for your support.  We ask that you help us in our efforts to bring quality Christian, family entertainment to downtown Kingsport.  We cannot do this without your help.

“Renovate the State”

We are getting more excited as the days go by.  We had a wonderful prayer meeting on Wednesday night (June 6th) on Broad Street.  We believe that God is going to do “immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.”  He has been wowing us lately.

Over the last couple of weeks, the contractors have been pulling numbers together to let us know what the renovations will actually cost.  We are all sitting on pins and needles praying that the estimates will not overwhelm our expectations.  We are thankful for the many people and businesses that have contributed supplies and/or labor toward the renovations thus far:


-Walmart: Two dehumidifiers for the basement
Fluorescent fixtures for the basement


-Target: Vacuum cleaner & Carpet Cleaner


-Vulcan: Gravel for the basement


-Scott Elrod: All of the painting (We supply the paint)


-Marquee Theatres:  Popcorn Machine, Fountain Drink machine


-Michael Brown:  Electrical Labor


-Joey Mustian:  Electrical Labor


-Johnson City Heating & Air: Labor & Discount for HVAC


-Wholesale Supply: Discount on fixtures and supplies


-Moody Sprinkler:  Sprinkler System


-Mike Johnson:  Glass Work


These are to name a few.  Everything that we can get donated or discounted will help reduce the overall cost of the renovations.  God is blessing us through His people and their willingness to help out.  We believe that He is stirring up great things.

We want to remind everyone to please drop-by the Downtown Kingsport Association on June 9th, between 7:00 PM & 9:00 PM to find out how they can help with this huge undertaking.  There will be free food and a presentation will be given on the proposed construction on the State.  You will also be able to make contributions that evening toward the areas of renovations in which you might be interested.   I will be available to answer any questions that you may have.

You will also be able to purchase a Vintage Chair in honor and/or memory of someone you love.  The chairs are going fast. They will be selling for $100.  If you are interested, you might want to go ahead and contact us so that you don’t miss this unique opportunity.

Again, please let everyone know about “Renovate the State” Saturday, June 9th from 7:00 PM ‘til 9:00 PM.  We want to meet and greet with as many people as we can. We will also be handing out FREE vouchers for our Patriotic Show that will be playing at our Fall Branch location.

Please be in prayer for us.  We have entered a contract with another ministry to purchase our property.  Everything looks great right now.  We are excited to see this particular ministry get our facilities to help continue sharing the truth of Christ to hurting people.

We will be meeting with Citizens’ Bank on Thursday (7th) at 2:00.  Please pray that God will have His way and that everything will be in His timing.  We want to be anxious for nothing, and continue to believe God to do all that is necessary for us to move.

Please be reminded that we will need a good bit of money to go forward with construction.  No amount is too small.  Please ask God to show you how you can help be a part of this monumental occasion in the life of Vision Productions, Inc./ LampLight Theatre.

Thanks again for your patience in this journey to downtown Kingsport.  In the midst of this waiting process, I found myself making frequent trips to Broad Street.  I have been reminded why I have missed being there so much.  The business owners and city workers have been very encouraging with their excitement about the State Theatre opening and our coming to be a part of their community.

We finally got word back from Citizen Bank (Rogersville) that the offer of $350,000 was accepted.  They had a roofer come and make the necessary repairs on the building before they signed the offer.  We are grateful.

We are appreciative for those of you who have been so generous in giving toward our building fund.  We have raised over $270,000 in pledges which will be given over the next 2 years. We have only $80,000 to go on the purchase price of the building.

Cindy Martin, Venture Director on our Executive Board, is currently pursuing the best options and financing products available from local banks and lending institutions.  We felt that the floating interest rate (offered by Citizens Bank) might not be the best option for us.  We are praying for God to give us direction and discernment as we pursue financing.

We will be holding another Town Meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd at LampLight Theatre in Fall Branch for our volunteers and for those who currently feel connected to the theatre.  We will be giving updates and insight on our fundraising event for renovations.  We want to keep our LampLight family as informed as possible on everything we know at this point.

We are currently looking for commercial contractors who are interested in putting in bids for the renovation process so that we can better determine the full cost of renovations on the State Theatre.  We have had a couple of contractors to step forward who are experienced in specific areas of commercial construction.  We are going to need others as well.  We are praying for God to send contractors who have a heart for ministry and community and understand why we are doing this.  We have to keep the cost down in order to keep our focus on our existing ministry in the forefront. We will be hosting a fundraising event at the Downtown Kingsport Association on Main Street in Kingsport on June 9th, 2012 from 7pm until 9pm for anyone interested in giving toward the renovations of the State Theatre.  At that time, we hope to have a goal amount based on the contractors’ bids.  The evening will consist of a presentation of all renovations that will need to be made.  Different stations will be set-up for people to contribute toward the areas in which they are interested.  No donation is too small.  From purchasing a vintage theatre chair, to financing the building of an office, to buying toilet fixtures, we are trusting for people to give toward the areas of their best interest.  We will be providing hors d'oeuvres and refreshments for all in attendance.  This will be a drop-in event and everyone is welcome.

Even though this is a public event, we will be sending out personal invitations to potential donors who have been passed onto us.  We are praying that God will send individuals, businesses, organizations, and churches who share our vision of seeing the State Theatre re-opened with quality, family entertainment.  If you know of anyone who you would like to receive an invitation to this fundraising event, please contact our office by Tuesday, May 29.  This will allow us time to send out their invitation for the event.

Again, we have been overwhelmed by the ongoing public interest and support.  We have been humbled by the encouragement and contributions that have been made thus far.  We still have a huge task ahead of us.  We would like to be in the State Theatre by our 2012 Christmas Season this year.  This rests entirely on God’s will and the generosity of His people and this community.  We will need to raise the support for the renovations pretty quickly in order to complete the renovations and occupy the State Theatre by Christmas.

We trust there are people out there with the same heart as ours.  We are believing for God to allow us to come together to see a miraculous dream come true.  Please be in prayer with us and for us as we continue this process.  We are extremely excited, but a bit overwhelmed by the task that has been entrusted to us.

            I just wanted to write a note of thanks to all of you for the support you have shown with the biography.  The book has been well received and I have been amazed by the response.

            I want to also thank you for the kind letters and e-mails that we have received.  We want to encourage you to leave a comment on the website: I would love for others to be able to read your testimonials as well.

            For those who don’t know, we had our first book signing at LifeWay in Johnson City, TN.  It was the largest turnout they have ever had for a book signing.  They also selected our ministry to feature for the month of August.  They asked for contributions to purchase bibles for students for our outreach programs.  We have received over 400 bibles so far.  God is amazing.  Thank you LifeWay Christian Bookstore.

            We will be planning more book signings this fall.  We have had a pretty hectic schedule for summer and will be able to concentrate on those this fall. With over 200 concerts and speaking engagements a year, it is hard to carve out time for everything. Pray that God will show us how to balance everything.  I find myself in a whirlwind sometimes, but I love what God is doing.

            Many of you have taken advantage of the discounts offered through our website.  We just want these books in the hands of as many people as we can. We hope the book will encourage and inspire many to persevere in hard times.
